Lactose

ad

Anyone ever develop a lactose intolerance that they never had before ? I could drink milk all day but here lately every time I do it's pain!!! Just wondering if anyone else ever devolop a issue as they got older

I've just discovered these Lactase tablets you can get from the health food shop to stop lactose intolerace - I decided to try them so I can drink thicker powders also that contain protein concentrate & casein and they work miracles - No stomach bloating or pain whatsoever! Does anybody else use these at all?

They work for some and don’t for others. My wife is lactose intolerant and the pills don’t work at all for her. They do work pretty well for my daughter.

Reading into it more it does seem 50/50 as to whether they work for people or not. I never realised lactose gets converted into glucose in the body! Intolerant people don't produce enough lactase in the body which is needed to break down the lactose so the tablets just put a load of lactase into your stomach to compensate for this. Interesting stuff lol

I can imagine that being the case actually - I'd say I'm probably 5/10 on severity of tolerance so not a horrendous sufferer as such. I never expected it to work at all though - I took one just before one of the cheapest shakes known to man which has had me bloated for 4 hours before unable to eat but they just taste Very nice and it just passed straight through me! Just for the sake of trivia: 98% of Asians are lactose intollerant. There - don't say I never have exciting information.

press1's picture

That's very surprising given all the cream they put in their cuisine isn't it...

In the Phils they only ever use cream in desserts. I have never seen it used in local dishes.

It can rear its ugly head as we age,,just like everything else. Try lactose free for awhile and see if it helps.

Speaking of lactose. A carton of full flavored egg nog made its way into my fridge. 180 calories per 1/2 cup, so good.

vhman's picture

It's not uncommon for people to become lactose-intolerant as we age. Biologically, were not designed to process milk as we age. Usually people from Northern Europe are the only ones who can process lactose as they age.
My wife and one kid is lactose intolerant and became so as they got older. My wife drinks lactose free milk and does great. There are pills that you can take to help you digest lactose, but it doesn't work for everyone. All you can do is see what works for you.

yup, what vhman said. i drank milk for 25 years and never had any problem. right around 25 i started having problems with dairy. it took a while to realize i needed to give it up, and of course i didnt want to, now i dont do any dairy in my diet. its a shame because i love yogurt and cottage cheese, but at this point its just not worth it. they screw up my digestion so badly.

There are lots of Brands. Just find one that works for you.
I'd also give the pills a shot. I think "Lactaid" is the main brand. It does work for many people.
You'd be surprised how many foods have lactose in it. Be aware of them or pay the consequences.

I developed a light lactose intolerance since i was 16/17, when i drank it in just 1-2 hours i had to run to the bathroom... so i decided to avoid milk and every form of lactose for years. Only in the recent past i've started eating cheese with low lactose %, and sometimes the ones that aren't, and discovered i can handle them, with some extra farts (but who cares ? Just saying "Wasn't me"). My advice is avoid lactose for some weeks, then try to reintroduce it gradually, start with foods with low lactose % once per week and see how it goes. That's what i feel to suggest you from my own experience.

Start drinking Fairlife milk. Lactose free and has double the protein of regular milk.

Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna give it a shot next time I'm food shopping.

Gymjunkie01's picture

That did the trick ... no pain no bloat it's more expensive but way worth it

It definitely is more expensive, but I figure with double the protein, no lactose and great taste I am getting my money's worth too. I burn through a jug every couple of days now.

I'm actually at the store now looking I see it it's in the blue container

The 2% is the blue container. That is what I like. The red is the whole milk, good for bulking. Try the chocolate. That stuff is the bomb!

Gymjunkie01's picture

Thanks got the red container lets see how this goes

Drank it like crazy when I was younger and never an issue but then a few years back, same thing, felt like almost over night I could not have a glass of milk or a bowl of friggin Cheerios without getting major bubble guts and spending half the day in the day on the throne. It seems to be getting better though now so hopefully same will happen for you.
