Birmingham Al

ad

Anyone from Birmingham or visited there,?
I've had a pretty good job offer in the area.
Never been there but it seems to be a pretty big city.
Any input would be appreciated. I have to make a decision by the 15th...

GizmoDuck's picture

What did you decide?

Porkbythapound's picture

If you like football. You’d be near the best damn college and team around!

Greg's picture

How so? He's hundreds of miles from Texas.

Never been there but I do here they have problem w crime. But I'm sure ull be living in the outskirts of the big city. You have nice beaches below u (been there several times), and plenty of hunting and fishing. Working 6days a week is for the young. I still do it, but its catching up. Not to mention u can never enjoy anything because ya always working. I'm not sure where ur at now, if it's nice, peaceful, scenic, and u have job security, I'd have to stay. Now if it's all about the money? Then of coarse, go wherever is paying most!

GizmoDuck's picture

Have y’all made a decision?

Nah I'm talking to them Friday.

I have family members that live there. Their occupations allow them to live in a closed gate community so the crime doesn't spill over to their area. But all big cities have crime. I thought it was quite nice to be honest. I too will be uprooting in the next couple of years. Can't wait....log home life with 20+ acres. Whatever you choose Sam, I wish you the best buddy.

I think they speak the same language so a move shouldn't be that difficult.

...And there's a Golden Corral down the road in Hoover. [drops mic]

Nice...

Sometimes a move is exactly what one needs if life is getting stale. I’ve lived in 5 different cities in the past 7 years. It can be tough if you have a good group of friends and you go out and do stuff. If you just have a bunch of acquaintances in your life then I say go for it. I had to move around before I found where I wanted live but sounds like you’ve been in the same spot so it may be different for you. Just my 2cts

No one is going to spoon feed you an answer Sam!
Only blood work will tell ...
Ha . J.K.
When a ship comes into port there are 3 light houses.
If all do not line up then there is danger. (Rocks, shallow)
My 3 light houses that have to line up for safe entry are..
God
My wife. (Life partner/best friend)
Me.
Always me last and God first.
If these light houses line up there is safe passage.

Solid advice. Sadly the missionaries seem to have given up on me...LDS easily have the cutest missionary. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Truth is I'd like to move to Fl but unfortunately theres no coalmines there.
Honestly I'd probably look like Buford T Justice when he retired.
I'm one of them dudes that wears socks with his sandals...

Are you going back into mining again then?

Maybe. Got my new job going good.
Keep thinking I'd love to be in a bigger City but Idk.
I'm certain it would be six days a week.
Ins is free but it's only 80 20. I had 100 percent for 30 years so that's a strike. Salary and bonus opportunity are good though.

Did the early retirement just end up doing your head in mate or do you just want the money again?

If it’s worth it money wise, then do it, unless you have been where you are at a long time,
Then it may be over whelming. Go check out the area in person first, I don’t know how the city is but have been through there on my way to Foley/orange beach/ Pensacola with the fam many times.. that’s a decent area with white sandy beaches you won’t be too far from.....

Been here all of my life except when I was in the Military. Had the same job 30 years, same house 25 years.
I'm basically a hillbilly in denial.
If I'm not on here much after the 15th you'll know I took it. I basically log in to talk shit to people since I retired...the plus is I'd have real people to talk shit to.
The minus is my house is paid for.

Thanks bro. Been thinking of a reason to move and this pops up.
I've got 15 pieces of free weight and plate loaded equipment in my basement and 12 vintage Nautilus machines in my garage. Itd be a bitch to move that shit..lol

I lived there for 4 years, I lived around Moody Alabama and worked in Birmingham. I chose moody because it was right next to Barbers motorsports and I was able to schedule all kinds of track days without having to sleep over night in the paddocks. Trussville is a decent area to live as well. I enjoyed my time there mostly for the condition of the roads.

Right there next to Bass Pro Shops too - depending on how long ago it's been since you moved.

I'm honestly pretty dependent on my wife. All I've done the last 20 years is go to work. I'd go downhill quick without her lol.

I'm about an hour from there. Better be some dang good money for me to live there. It's in the top 15 most dangerous cities. Murder capital. All depends where you're coming from though also.

Sam I Am's picture

It's at one of the Coalmines inbetween Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
I'm aware of the crime. Fortunately Trulia gives neighborhood crime statistics.
Theres quite a bit of mining in that area so I dont care about putting this info out.
My retirement job is better for my bodybuilding lifestyle but I've been kinda bored. That's why I'm on here daily. I do prefer my internet friends honestly.

Like said below if it benefits take it but take into consideration is it worth enough to move your whole life to a new place meaning kids new schools losing their friends your friends your wife's friends and family I would talk to them, if your single pack your bags bro anything that will improve life is worth going for

addicted.to.pain's picture

depends where your coming from sam, If your coming from the west coast its gonna seem like an alien planet.

coming from Up north in a big city, and its just kinda getting used to the accents and food.

GizmoDuck's picture

My cousins and uncle live in Pratville. It’s small and around there I believe. I do know they love their football.

If it’s a good job offer and will benefit your family. Go for it man. Moving is def a trying time.

I have moved over 8 times to different cities and states. What I’ve foubd it was more difficult to make friends just due to age, every place is relatively the same. Minus the tourist spots like Orlando. And every city has their good and bad areas

Plus. Also depends on where you’re moving from. Say moving from a place like LA then yea Birmingham May be a little culture shock and different

But. They will have a gym, movies, restaurants, and things for a family to do. In the end you have to do what is right for you and your family. Don’t know if that helps at all man

Sam I Am's picture

That's good advice. Thanks

Exciting and scary at the same time. Think about the pro's and cons. Make a descision and stick with it. Goodluck sam. Im a believer in karma and if you take your job as serious as your job here. You will nail it no matter which you chose
