Anyone here ovo-lacto vegetarian?

Putting this in off-topic since it’s really just a question for my own curiosity.

The only animal protein I’m currently getting is two good sized chicken breasts a day. It seems like I can easily—and much more cheaply!—swap the chicken out entirely and mix the rice with black beans instead to get protein with a complete amino profile. Seriously considering this for both my wallet and my health.

My iron is up there. Not high enough not to donate on a regular basis, but high-ish. I’d like to lower it a bit. Poultry is very rich in heme iron, the kind that’s easily absorbed and raises iron and RBC. All meats are, basically. Cutting it out of my diet would help keep my RBCs down and my iron in check, theoretically.

And I swear I’m not on an anti-vitamin C supplement crusade lately, but it seems vitamin C in the amounts present in supplements enhance iron absorption. If you struggle with high iron or high RBCs and you supplement vitamin C, it may be making it worse. Hemochromatosis is a very real risk we face when stacking anabolics, heavy weight training, and a diet rich in iron.

I’d still be eating eggs and dairy, hence ovo-lacto. Anyone experienced with this nutritional lifestyle?

Here are some other options to remove/block absorption. Blood donations being #1
Apple Cider Vinegar
Fermented foods/vegies
DE (Diatomaceous Earth) binds to and removes - take away from all other pills & food
Tumeric - binds to iron to remove
Tannic Accids - block absorbtion (possibly rice bran as well)
Sweating

This is from the Root Cause Protocol - which believes that Iron toxicity because of the added iron in today's food & or taking iron is the cause of many diseases. Start checking the labels of your food and you will be amazed at all the products that add iron.

Its good for you! So I'd say keep at it.... Before you give up meat altogether because of iron, google the Root Cause Protocol or there are a couple facebook groups that discuss it. Although I don' t ever focus or believe in any one person's take on health it is very interesting as to good iron vs bad iron - the idea is to get your iron or any minerals/vitamins from natural sources instead of man made and it does make sense. I think maybe they go a bit overboard and are a little narrow minded and think its the answer to everything but its worth the read.

Kudos for thinking outsode of the proverbial.

I periodise everything I can, incuding protein sources. Your guts will thank you for what you are doing and if you completely drop any processed sugars while doing that you would be surprised at the positive impact it has on various natural hormone profiles and brain function. Protein free periods are great too when not totally dedicated to growth that is.

Over the years i have done trials with most options, including going 100% animal-anything free for 2 years. In an all or nothing approach it conflicts with the barrier breaking bodybuilding approach... but it is 100% fantastic for a holistic natural approach to life, where gut health (and therefore hormonal and brain function) is most valued.

If max bodybuilding and strength are goals, i believe periodisation is a better option over all/nothing.

Well I’ll start tomorrow. Today is going through my last two chicken breasts. If my iron goes down by the time I donate in February compared to my last donation and if I’m still making gains, I’ll be happy. If my bloods look amazing, maybe I’ll reintroduce just one chicken breast a day if I feel it necessary. The thing I periodoze the most is the type of rice I get. Brown apparently isn’t cultivated around me to the point where it’s abailable in anything but instant at any store I’ve been to, so I cycle between long grain enriched, long grain enriched parboiled, Jasmine, and basmati. Exciting, huh?

I don’t eat any processed sugars at all. None. Haven’t for over a year.

Nah I get it on the rice thing. I spent time doing that to a smaller extent but more through concern over the arsenic issue. We had to take a serious look at it as parents too, for the kids' health.... it is hard to avoid rice for kids when not breast feeding (her, not me!). Took me a while to get het to be ok with getting them to whole foods asap but we got there.

The arsenic thing was a real concern for me so, in the end, i ended up settling for imported basmari only. From Pak etc... once washed, seems to have the lowest levels. Lower led consumption again by periodising carby sources too.

This is interesting, last time I donated I believe my iron was 16, I believe over 19 you cannot donate. What is the nutrition value of beans and rice co.oared to a chicken breast. I love some beans and rice, but never thought it would compare to a chicken breast.

Mine was around 17 last time.

Rice (I’m pretty sure all varieties, but anything long grain is best) and beans on their own are incomplete proteins. But rice and black beans combined together provide all the amino acids to be, y’know, fuckin’ protein.

My meals would be 1 cup long grain rice (measured uncooked) + 100 grams black beans (measured uncooked) = 34 grams of quality protein give or take. Equivalent to about a 4 oz. portion of chicken, but that’s just protein. Obviously the rice and beans has the healthy carbs and micronutrients as well. Black beans are a potassium powerhouse.

Edit: my bad. Equivalent to an 8 oz. portion of chicken, not 4.

I flavor it with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar and sprinkle red pepper flakes on it. Tasty and nutritious!

Ovo = eggs,Lacto =milk,cheese etc.Pretty self explanatory.Certainly not vegan which is the vegetarian of the day but a much more complete diet.For a bodybuilder,the ovo/lacto is much more complete.Eggs,beans(Black,pinto,red,and garbanzo aka chickpea,all give you about 25 grahams of quality protein in two cups cooked.Even early peas black eyed peas and petit green have a good amount of protein.This with eggs and milk and cheese and protein requirements are easy to meet.Especially with the fair life higher protein ratio milk.
The one thing to keep in mind about iron though,is the most absorbable form is going to come from greens.Spinach,collards,kale are all loaded with iron and calcium which increases the absorption of minerals.With that in mind,it may not be the chicken.

Greens are rich in iron, but it’s still the non-heme kind, which is never as bioavailable as heme iron from meat. Only leafy greens I eat is broccoli. In moderation. I hope it’s okay.

It should be.Spinach can be a culprit.It will send my wife's through the roof.Hemocrit is a little different than too much iron.Technically it's the rbc count that is the problem.

There’s no correlation between high iron and high hematocrit? I’ve been looking into that and can’t seem to find a straight answer. I would think the two kind of go hand in hand. I could be wrong.

Ovo lacto just means that eggs and all dairy products are still on the table.
