Back on the wagon

ad

Hey guys, and girls. After feeling sorry for myself for a couple years and drinking heavily, I have gotten back onto the water wagon and been putting money into a gym with great equipment and a swimming pool. Sobriety is a much harder goal than just getting dry, so it took another year to get my head straight.

My son is about to turn 18 and he has been body conscious for a while, he started to get really depressed. He has wanted to hit the gym with me for so long now and I finally got my head out of my arse to help him out. It looks like a really different crowd around here these days, and some great information out there.

Well, hi again and I hope to get into the jump again as I put my stuff back in order. I got a gut that just won't quit, so I will be hanging out mostly on the diet page. I'm still a promo whore, so you can always find me sniffing about there too :-)

As always, I am ALWAYS open to ideas to relieve a painful shoulder. Pinpoint hole in the cartilage and I am not going through surgery, so it is suck it up and push the weight, but I have often found tricks on here that give some help.

Cheers,

Awesome to hear back in gym, going to be working out with your boy. Awesome. That will help form a better bond. I know when I have time to go to the gym with my old man it brings us closer together, and pushes me harder. Granted all we do is make fun of each other during the gym sesh but its great bonding. Congrats man on the sobriety too. One day a time man.

As for the shoulder, id go see a doc and ask what he recommends instead of surgery. Last thing you want is for that hole to turn into a tear, and throw a big wrench into everything. When it comes to health don't mess around or try to "fix" or "manage" yourself. See a doc and go through options

once again welcome back and enjoy that bonding time with your boy. I know I enjoy it with my dad when we able to

First of all brother, very good work in trying to get clean. Nothing is more admirable than a chronically self-ill person as we say in the medical field " Getting your shit , together ". Keep it day at a time .

Now as per shoulder work. I would sart my work outs with a looong warmup. Using bands to work specific rotator cuff movements. You may also use light/no weight cables and even holding 2 /12 plate to work your range of motion , rotator cuffs, and fully warmup by brings lots of blood to the area. You can google and youtube specific movements with great success. Also think about cable movements exclusively esp. for upright rowas and all your side and rear work. (no homo). Work lighter and really feel the movement and focus on a full range of motion along with your mind muscle connection.

Would also avoid such movements as flat barbell bench or barbell behind the neck presses. And back to cables, I would think of using cables for all the arm work as well.

And get your son to the gym with you. Nothing is more empowering that taking control of your health and body. Plus the memories you will build will last a lifetime for both of you.

Good Luck

Took me a few goes at it myself honestly and the line between sober and dry is a fine but clear cut one. The difference is pretty crazy when I think about it. Nothing will help u more than surrounding urself with other like minded people. That goes for the gym too. Use ur son as motivation but ultimately do it for urself. I find the gym to be my relief and like meditation. Good luck

I have a parent who is an abusive alcoholic who I've had to cut all contact with now, after hundreds of chances I've finally had enough. I'll never understand how as a parent of a child you love and have a great responsibilty for how alcohol can come first.
