+ 8 STRESS: A GENERAL DISCUSS0ION

ad

Stress and it's negative impact on both physical and emotional health have been recognized by numerous professions for quite a while. It can have damaging effects on our workouts and our physiques!

Although we understand the physiology of stress, it's true effects, and total long-term effects are still not fully comprehended. Basically, when we are stressed we secrete adrenaline, nor epinephrine, and cortico steroids. These hormones create tension, muscle tightness, and can restrict blood flow.

The results can be anything ranging from a minor tension headache to a fatal heart attack. Stress is a killer, and there's no denying that. Countless numbers of bodies lying graves prematurely, because they’re victims did not know how to manage stress.

The stress and burdens of modern society in themselves are a cause of stress. Since we cannot change our society, and the complexities and burdens of it will only intensify; once again, we are faced with choice.

The choice is simple and perhaps cruel. However, I don't make the rules; I merely state them the way they are. The choice is learn to manage our stress, or let it make us sick, or kill us. The latter choice is the wrong answer.

Before we can alleviate stress, we first need to acknowledge that we are stressed. Many people go into denial when it comes to this subject. Although it is true for both sexes, it is probably more prevalent among males.

Men are supposed to be macho, tough and strong. Therefore, admitting stress is taken by many men to be a sign of weakness. This is simply not true. As the world has changed and become more hectic, we need to change our attitudes toward the stress that we all face.

Denial never works, because it creates a false a reality. Admission is not weakness; it is a sign of strength. Even the most decorated war heroes have suffered from post combat trauma. These are some of the bravest people in the world, and the strongest. However, they are human, and absolutely no one is spared stress, and even fear.

After we admit and recognize that we are stressed, the first thing we need to do, is determine the cause. Some people get very stressed by small things that go wrong, while others are shaken only by major events. Regardless of the cause, the effects are the same, and the results may be the same.

Stress arises from many different areas. Marital problems, problems with children, difficulties at work, financial problems, physical problems or injuries and associated pain, or simply the overwhelming burdens of our lives can cause major stress.

The lesson to be learned here is that the stress is going to remain whether we like it or not. The important thing is how we deal with and handle the stressful situations. Proper handling of the situation will reduce tension and stress. Conversely, the improper handling of the situation will intensify and magnify the stress, and the perceived stress.

Sudden and unexpected tragedies can cause traumatic stress instantly. Floods and natural disasters, a serious auto accident, a friend or loved one getting very sick or passing away unexpectedly, are but a few examples of situations that can occur to anyone, and wreak havoc.

People who were functioning very well, and are suddenly faced with one of the situations mentioned above, may begin to have very serious stress related problems. This is very understandable, and very human. Tragedies occur in this world that are beyond our comprehension.

No one can prepare for these types of events. When they happen, we must try our best to move quickly in handling the stress as best we can. The longer we wait; the worse it will be! Moving quickly does not cure the situation, but it helps to lessen our chances of having a physical or mental breakdown.

Minor things can be very stressful to most people. Life is full of things that seem trivial until something goes wrong. Getting a flat tire in the middle of congested highway at rush hour, our car not starting, a roof leaking in our house, a power outage, an appliance that breaks down, nagging minor injuries, being exposed to horrible whether, not getting deliveries on time, making unnecessary mistakes, are but a few examples of an almost endless list of minor things that can lead to frustration, anger, and increased stress levels.

Although most people know that they have no control of the situations, and they are not to blame, they cannot help overreacting, and getting stressed.

Like everything else in life, it takes time to change our habits. Old habits die hard, but they do die if we choose to send them to Heaven. Just as we need to learn new habits in diet, nutrition, exercise, and sleep; we must learn new habits in handling stress.

All these components must be handled properly in order to achieve maximum health. Leading a happier, healthier, more productive life takes a lot of work. However, it is worth every minute, and you'll of the beneficiary.

Although it is a lot of work, the benefits begin immediately, and you will start to see and feel the improvement. As your health improves, and your life improves, there is nothing better! The benefits you receive far outweigh the work you put in. Life is precious, and living a longer and healthier life is worth the work that is required.

Although we will never be 100% stress free, if we learn to keep our stress levels manageable, then we will succeed in obtaining maximum health. So, there is no utopia, but there are answers, and methods that you will learn to use to get as close as you possibly can.

In order to get the most out of your workouts and gym endeavors you must lower and handle stress properly!

Great read. Stress is and has always been my worst enemy. In my mid-teens I feel into the wrong crowd like many do. I came from a very rough upbringing and my so called father went to prison when I was 10 for stabbing my mother 6x nearly killing her and she spent a little over a month in the hospital. Being so young that really had a negative impact on my life and lets just say it went completely down hill from there. Being introduced to drugs at such a young age warped my out look on life. Using drugs to deal with my emotions instead of seeking real medical help stunted my ability to deal with and process everyday problems and stress in a positive aspect. For many many years every time I felt unhappiness or stress coming on I had to run to drugs or the bottle to try and mask my issues not realizing that the problem that caused me to turn to drugs would still be there and at times even worse once the High was gone. For so many years that was my life that was my copping tool. The inability to process and deal with stress in a positive way real destroyed a big pat of my life. I lost a great deal of good in my life because of stress. It wasn't in till like 8yrs ago once I got clean that I reached out for medical help. It was hard to except that I let this problem take over and ruin so much of my life. I still have trouble at times dealing with stress but the fact that my Dr told me I'm well on my way to a heart attack and that I did lose so much of my life because of stress I try to do everything in my power to properly manage my stress level so that I don't lose everything I have, my family and my life. I strongly urge everyone to try and manage their stress and not let it destroy their life.

It was a long tough road and it took a great support system but with a lot of work and the love of the gym, life is good now. Not saying I'm stress free or that it doesn't ever pull me down at times but I've really learned to handle it in a positive way.

I think stress is a natural part of life, but some of us put ourselves under much higher stress loads than others. I think trading crypto and options all the while running a small business has made me extremely stress resilient. That said occasionally it will still catch up to me and I will get a migraine. Heart may explode someday lol

Learning to ride an 80% retracement after a parabolic curve requires incredible resilience. The intensity of my workouts are definitely working to compensate until the next bull run. BTW, +1, I don't want a mod's heart to explode. No homo.

Yea, options are a riot. it was a pretty good day today until about 3pm when the China selling treasuries shit hit. Still finished the day well and cashed out of some FB calls for a nice profit.

Without an absolute doubt I find the best thing for built up stress and anxiety is training, without that release life would be unimagineable. Sure there are stresses that you simply have to deal with such as a flat tyre and mortgages/bills but the other ones that come along that you have no control over that occupy your mind simply dissappear and become irrelevant after a good session with the iron Smile +

Ive been very fortunate, I have no kids, pay my bill's on time and have good morals and a great relationship with my wife, I have enough years in my career, that what used to be stressful is no more. Not going to claim I am completely stress free, but unless it impacts my wife or future family I dont take it too seriously. Good post though.

Happy for you. +1

Yeah, kids are stressful but love em dearly. Mine think I named them all Jesus Christ because I’m always saying things like, “Jesus Christ, stop jumping off the kitchen counter!” or, “Jesus Christ, Don’t put that crayon in your sister’s nose!”

At least they aren’t in diapers anymore.

What a coincidence to have this posted today. I am starting the largest most difficult project at work tomorrow and I have already been feeling the stress this week. My last project was damaging to my health; I had no work life balance, barely saw my kids. I was working 14 hours a day with an occasional 18 or 19 hour day. This project is starting with similar problems as the last one - manning issues, insufficient duration, lack of materials, poorly defined work scope, and lack of support from my leadership. I discussed my concerns with managing stress to my supervisor both for myself and my team. He is understanding and gives me a lot of freedom to give people an extra breather at my discretion. But he is now being reassigned. Not sure what I’m gonna do. I’m somewhat hunting for another job but would probably equate to a 40% reduction in pay. I can absorb this but I’m hoping I can just find away to manage the stress and stay where I’m at. I’m not one to quit and this would be a stepping stone to something bigger with my career.

+1 bro I just started 6 weeks ago on proxatine to help with stress and anxiety and it just really started kicking in and I'm feeling way better next time I see my doc I'm going to ask to bump it up a bit and get back to how I felt 10 years ago

Great post and this is something I have been spending a lot of time thinking about and putting effort into lately. I have come to realize in my mid 30s that I never learned how to manage stress properly. Looking back I can see and feel how much this insufficiency has impacted me and continues to.

I think self-care is something that is not talked about nearly as much as it should be. When you dont apply certain habits and abilities, especially coping and stress management it really degrades your quality of life and prevents you from being a quality significant other or member of your family. When you are in survival mode and trying to just cope but coping poorly and staying in a fixed mind-set which prevents you from growing and thriving.

Your physique can take a hit, yes, but more importantly you cannot live the best life possible ..

Amen man. It’s true. Stress is an everyday thing. It’s all in how we manage it. We can handle it correctly and let it drive us, or handle it wrong and let it consume us. I choose the former! FTW
