+ 5 Bodybuilder Justyn Vicky Dead After Snapping Neck During Lift

ad

Bodybuilder Justyn Vicky, age 33, broke his neck during an accident while performing a back squat at a gym in Bali. Vicky was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery and died shortly after from neck and spinal injuries. The cause of death is reportedly a broken neck.

Not sure if anyone here knows or follows his content, a friend of mine does and sent this to me so thought it would be interesting to share here.

Interestingly there is a video released of the accident by the Bali news website;
https://www.balidiscovery.com/man-dies-in-freak-mishap-at-bali-gym/ (Scroll down for video)

Also strangely a lot of the news websites are reporting it was a '180KG Squat', but the colour of the plates in the video show it was actually 210KG unless I'm missing something.

Regardless, tragic and unfortunate. RIP.

I buddy of mine had a squat rage cage style, hand maybe and we got him car safety belts.. He tried them with 270 kg and there solid!!

Yeh I guess they will work!!! Not sure what kind of tolerances a seat belt has to withstand - I guess it must be like 10 x the weight of the person when you factor in acceleration of the car etc Lol

At least they aren't blaming it on steroids, not yet anyway. That is one freaky accident. Another reason for me not to do squats.

As I’ve gotten older and had a few (non weightlifting) injuries, one severe, it may make me sound like a pussy but I haven’t been under a barbell in years. No benches, squats, rows or overhead presses. Everything has been dumbbells. It’s kept me out of trouble I do believe.

I have scoliosis and torsion in my spine. Squatting and deadlifts have been out of my routine for years now. Surefire way to put me in a wheelchair if I do them. I couldn't do squats even I wanted to. I can't get my arms back to hold on to the damn bar anyway Lol

Because your shoulders are fucked up or does the size of your delts keep you from reaching that far back?

My shoulders are like that now too, I cannot rotate/turn my hands far enough back to hold the bar on my back. Have to use a Squat safety bar now. Always had bad shoulder mobility though for some reason.

I hear ya, I had a few slipped cervical discs that thankfully sucked back in with treatment. That was close to a year of excruciating pain and a numb arm. Moderate spinal stenosis in the same area and a little lower. We have to be VERY conscious of what we do.

I once saw a clip of a bodybuilder doing a back flip, landed on his head and no doubt broke his neck and died. I think his mass and bodyweight didn't help, a slim man would more than likely survive such a daft thing to do.
They definitely don't help themselves.

I don't know why people squat outside the rack like that, I see this all the time in gyms and it pisses me off. It's not even a standard cage he's using.
