+ 2 East Germans Force-Trained In Special Underground Atmospheric Chamber During Cold War
Hey what's up guys. I was watching an interesting show on Discovery, or one of those similar channels the other day and wanted to know if anyone else had seen it and what they thought. It was about the East Germans during the Cold War forcing their Olympic athletes to train in a secret underground two-story depressurised bunker where they could simulate high-altitude conditions with very little oxygen. It was supposed to be similar to training at an altitude of like 13,000 ft and produce more red blood cells and whatnot inside their bodies.
I think this was after they started testing for steroids, so they needed another way to assure they would outperform the other competitors. Or knowing them, they probably just used a newer steroid that was still undetectable along with this slave training. It was a huge underground bunker with all the latest training equipment, exercise bikes, pools etc.. They were forced to train there for many weeks, and when their red blood cell count was drastically raised they went to compete.
I guess technically they weren't breaking any rules by using performance enhancing drugs, but these people were being forced to train in these conditions for many weeks at a time like slaves. At the time, the East Germans would basically do anything to make sure they win the Olympics and prove that Communism is best. Anyway, it's a very interesting story to watch, and you can look it up on the internet as well.
I found a link on the internet where it's mentioned;

The thing was they got caught.
Anybody that believes it was only communist Countrys is probably reading Shirley Blabasaw books.
Alphamale500You're right! I'm sure the Americans were doing a lot of the same kind of shit as the East Germans were, and maybe even worse, who knows for sure? But I'm sure they would've done anything possible to not loose to the East Germans.
America, in the name of national security or whatever, has done so much terrible shit that we'll likely never even hear about. I heard of some of the projects they released, like MK-ULTRA and such. Or allegedly poisoning an entire French village with LSD to see how it could work in war. Some crazy shit man!
jayiskI agree with Sam. Germans did it to prove they were the best. Not that communism was the best.
The story i heard was the German lifting coach had got drunk one night with an American coach. And that is when he told him that they were using steroids.
So the US coach came back to the states and they rushed to come up with a steroid for the US Olympic team.
I would call that.., "Gear Wars" to see who could use and make the best compound for their lifters.
Alphamale500I don't see where Sam wrote that above anywhere, but I get what you're saying. But I think it really all boiled down to Communism, and their system being better than ours. Especially in that cold war period of time. It would be very different if we were talking about the German Nazi's and their "master race", but these were very different people, the East Germans.
And believe it or not, during those earlier cold war era days, turinabol was actually the popular steroid used amongst them. Knowing them, they probably had their athletes on tremendous doses mixed with all kinds of other shit too.
How and when they found out about steroid use, who really knows. With all the spys they had and we had, it was likely discovered very early on that steroids were being used likely on both sides. If you watch the show about this on tv it's really very interesting.
Cornelia Elder had already won silver at 14 years old in 72.
Babbashaw was not the favorite to win the 100 in 76.
The race wasnt even close.
I dont beleive the results would have been different and who knows what the US team was taking.
This is the kind of shit that makes Americans look bad imo.
I feel the same way about Bonds. I've taken alot of shit alot of years and cant hit a ball off a tee...
Alphamale500Yeah, I'm sure the Americans were likely taking lot of gear as well. Probably the best, most advanced shit too. At the time, the U.S. would probably do anything also to not risk loosing to the East Germans. And baseball was definitely so much more interesting when steroids were being used much more than they are used today, Lol!
I know training at higher altitudes helps with endurance by forcing muscles to perform at a set standard with less oxygen. But this is a different training perspective. Being they weren't sent out till RBC was high enough... Very interesting and always nice to learn a little more about sports history. Maybe someone can give a little more depth of how high altitude effects RBC enough to be considered legal doping?? +
Alphamale500Really was an awesome program to watch on tv!
Yes this is very interesting for sure! I don't know what the practical applications there are for bodybuilding however. We sure don't want to lift in Oxygen deprived conditions. +
Alphamale500Yeah I wouldn't wanna train in those kind of conditions.
