Thoughts on lambs liver

ad

So just had some lambs liver, to my suprise you get a lot for your money. 300 grams for £1.50
Per 100 grams you get
30g protein
12g fat
0g carbs
0.2g salt
Never considered liver in my diet before today, it would seem a good cheap source of protein to add to my diet.
Thoughts?

I'm definitely a big fan of liver whether it be chicken livers, beef or calf! A nutritionally dense powerhouse of nutrients! Back in the day, bodybuilding supplements were rare and few but one staple was desiccated liver tabs! I still utilize them from universal known as beef aminos!
A bodybuilder who can explain all this in a video is Evan Centopani! Great and informative video guys! Enjoy!
Also, if you e never tried bone marrow, give it a try, absolutely delicious! Recipes included :))

Liver is the #1 superfood... it's the most nutrient dense food, bar-none...
Eating it once per week is ideal.

Dr.BroScience's picture

Caesar , you are correct my man.

For thousands of years the liver was reserved exclusively for royalty for just that reason.

Why do you think back Golden Era , one of the first supplements was Liver Tablets?
We at not talking about Livr-52 here either.

In fact, the great legend Mohamed Makkawy , would completely fast in the final peak week before a contest and would supplement only with liver tabs. That says a lot about how classic bodybuilders felt about liver.

Me personally, I'm going to braise some Sheep Liver while poaching some organic duck eggs.

Then I'm going to be sooo super natty jacked like my hero , Mike Ohearn

Theophany's picture

I still remember seeing a photo of Mohamed Makkawy and his legendary trainer "the iron guru" Vince Gironda in a M&F magazine circa 1983-84! He possessed an extraordinary physique with such a harmonious flow! Mr. Gironda was definitely eccentric but he he was ahead of his time back in the day!

IrishMack's picture

Yes they did, but on a side note, these royalty never made it to 50. Their lifestyle of consuming all those "good for you" foods lead to their death. They did an autopsy king henry the eighth who was well known for engorging in liver and other "nutrient dense" foods and they found the guy was a walking billboard of what not to do. His heart was covered with atheroscoloris and his bones were brittle. His circulatory system was so clogged it was a wonder his blood pumped at all. Those liver pills you talk about we took them as a kid too or forced I should say BUT a 3 ounce bottle lasted us a month and we took it daily. Fish oil pills are mainly from a fish liver and that is good for you because it is such a minute amount in that tablespoon.

My point never was its bad for you dont eat it but it is a good supplement if taken in moderation.

Caeser's picture

Carnivores instinctively begin eating through the belly to get at organ meats...carnivores that live in packs, the alpha's get the organ meats. They are the most nutrient dense foods available in nature...
In almost all cultures history, organ meats are delicacies...
Cultures in cold climates that dont have access to vegetables consider liver a "vegetable"...
The only negative I can foresee is high cholesterol...if you monitor blood work, then it shouldn't be a problem.

IrishMack's picture

Where the problem comes from our lifestyle is testosterone is cholesterol, your body converts it. When you also add a lot of it from your diet thats when the issues begin. If we werent on a cycle or supplementing it on trt, we would be fine eating it 3 or 4 times a week.

Caeser's picture

Agreed IrishMack. When in combo w/AAS...it should be drastically restricted if one wants to add it to diet. I restrict my intake on AAS & monitor bloods.

Dr.BroScience's picture

Oh yes, brother. Absolutely.
I am an avid outdoorsman who knows all about that.
While Ive never heard liver being a "vegetable" before, I will look into that.
And as for high cholesterol, which is worse? 80/20 ground beef or liver?

Caeser's picture

100g of 80/20 beef will provide 71mg of cholesterol...
100g of Beef Liver will provide 355mg of cholesterol...

Neither is "worse"... the nutrient profile of Liver is significantly better:
Vitamin A = 522%
Iron = 34%
Vitamin B6 = 51%
Niacin = 87%
Phosphorus = 49%
Copper = 729%
Riboflavin = 201%
Vitamin B12 = 1385%
Zinc = 35%

***80/20 Beef is not even close to any of these ranges.

Cholesterol has been wrongfully labeled "bad".
Diet contributes to approximately 15% of total cholesterol...the other 85% is produced by the body itself.
Arterial plaque buildup is caused by many factors; not just simply cholesterol & fat consumption.
Cholesterol is integral for every cell membrane in one's body.
Cholesterol is integral to one's myelin sheath (nerves).
Cholesterol is a precursor to Vitamin D.
Cholesterol is paramount to the production of hormones.
If your diet is "on point" as many here love to say, then liver should not be a problem...

If you are bodybuilding and attempting to achieve the <6% BF, then it's likely that Beef Liver will not fit into your nutrition plan. The 8%-13% BF can benefit from the nutrition powerhouse. Of course limited consumption is recommended.

In the wild, carnivores will engorge and then fast for days (as our ancestors probably did). Thus, the need for nutrient dense foods. These foods are not intended to be consumed daily. But they should not be discounted & wrongfully labeled as "bad"...and substituted for vitamin pills or vitamin drinks.

Cholesterol and large amounts of it. Liver contains a shit ton of cholesterol calves liver is 379mg per 3 ounce serving. Chicken liver is over 400mg. Lambs liver is 345 per 3 ounce serving. Go return it before you have a heart attack. Eating it once a week is fine, every day and on cycle prepare for your bypass surgery

Dr.BroScience's picture

Thanks Mack for the breakdown.

Just to pose a question. If every golden era bodybuilder took liver tablets religiously.

Wouldn't they all have dropped dead from heart disease and attacks from the overload in cholesterol then?

Jayzgainz's picture

Oh man I'm so glad you posted this. I was just on my way to the supermarket to pick up a few choice cuts of my favorite filter when I read this. Dam...I guess I cant eat any more liver and I was SO looking forward to it....

That is a good amount of protein but ugh! The taste. My mom used to make liver for us regularly as kids because it was cheap. I would have to hide it in with other foods to choke it down. Maybe a nice liver, egg and tuna shake

Cook that shit in milk, sautee some onions to put on top. Another tip: clean the sand out of your vagina.
