+ 3 Piriformis Syndrom mimics Bulging Disc Pain

ad

I came to the boards after being told by my chiropractor that I had a bulging disc. He was wrong!

The piriformis muscle is a small muscle located deep in the buttock (behind the gluteus maximus). It runs diagonally, with the sciatic nerve running vertically directly beneath it.

Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle spasms or swells and causes buttock, hamstring pain and sometimes pain in the lower back and lower legs. After speaking with a spine specialist, he suggested that my piriformis might have been injured as a result swelled, putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. When I described my injury; occurred while squatting, no back pain, sharp pain right at middle of left glute radiating down directly to middle hamstring, he said that is likely the cause. He asked if it hurt more the next day and if I had more pain while standing still than I did moving. Both true. I actually finished the rest of my leg workout that day without any pain. He asked if I slouch to relieve pain while sitting. True.

Apparently, slouching causes the piriformis to tighten and pretty much pulls the hip region out of alignment. Think of all these pelvic muscles as cable on pulleys. When one is too tight it pulls everything out of whack. Mine was too tight, pressing on the sciatic nerve. My body trying to compensate and avoid pain was causing everything else to not be in the proper position.

I have been performing stretches to lengthen it again and my pain is decreasing my leaps and bounds daily. I squatted last night comfortably; I did 15 sets of 10 with 95 lbs. I had to make sure there was no spine issue. Feel fantastic today!

As an older guy that spends a lot of time sitting I will make it a point to stretch daily from here on out. I am very excited to ease back into REAL TRAINING again.

So I just want to stress to everyone when you are injured, see the doctors. Listen to what they say. And seek a second opinion if you are not satisfied with the rate of healing. My chiropractor actually suggested we hold off on an MRI. I should have known something was wrong. I have metal in me so an MRI is never a possibility. I thought I would give him a chance. After 2 months, I was still in pain. Now 1 week after seeing a spine specialist I am almost back to normal thanks to some easy stretching.

I have this as well. Was a nightmare to diagnose. The fact you can't get a MRI sucks. The sciatic nerve in some people actually goes through the piriformis muscle I have it in both hips because of how close the nerve is to the muscle. Playing sports my entire life didn't help and now spending lots of time driving and at a computer desk combined with training is literally the worst thing. These are pretty much the stretches I do here:

I've gotten to the point that just an occasional stretch and stretching during leg day training keeps it in check. And I was at the point that when I got out of bed or stood up after sitting I couldn't hardly walk. That was about a year ago and was expecting surgery. But was lucky to avoid it.

Just keep at it bro, it gets sooooooooo much better.

you can try a good massage therapist as well if they are good they will be able to tell.. I have one who was able to help me with it ..

what kind of metal ? shrapnel metal or plates etc from surgery?

also try doing some yoga to open up the hip joints ;)

almost forgot .. any good chiro will do x rays of the spine to diagnos something since you can see subluxations on exrays etc.. if your chiro doesn't or wont do x rays then they don't get to touch me

Shrapnel is embedded in tendon. I have been using a field hockey ball for trigger point and doing the prescribed stretches. My insurance doesn't cover massage, but I may look into it. I have gotten 2 massages in my life. I felt both were a waste of money. I am heavily muscled and neither was able to get deep enough into legs and back.

It is hard to find a good one but when you do they are very valuable .. the feild hockey balls work great when you don't have someone ..

try working some yoga in there ;-) it will help stretch the fascia also bathing in epsom salts helps also
