+ 9 Just some advice for the new guys starting out
ad
I have used the same motto all my adult life about training and gaining mass I think a lot of guys over look several important things im going to share with you.
- Eat big to get big
- train big to get big
- set Big goals to achieve.
most people don't realize that the mind is more powerful than one thinks . we was trained that the mind will fail before your body does every single time, you have to condition your self to that mind set. when you think you cant force down another meal or force out that last rep you can its just your mind telling you that you cant.
Three things that will never come out of my mouth when training.
1 I cant
2 I wont
3 I am to beat to do another set
THINK BIG .....GET BIG......think small achieve small.. its a mind game fellas master it

@Gymjunkie01, to add to this solid post, a key component to my own understanding of muscle building was when I finally realized the difference between lifting and training. Lifting just means you're moving mass through space. Training means you're actually concentrating on form, feeling the muscle contract, letting it stretch fully when the lift is done, etc. For example, doing curls, it's incredible how many guys just walk up to the dumbbells and fire off random sets. The gents with large arms all do it the same. They grab lighter weights, slow down, and squeeze the fuck out of the bicep as it contracts. It really pushes the muscle, and the lighter weights is easier on the joints & tendons (I'm almost 40, but I feel 65 sometimes! I digress). However, the concepts you've outlined above are all spot on. +1, good sir.
Couldnt agree more. Slow, deliberate and concise movements to target the intended muscle. Its all about time under tension and the "negative rep" for me. To me there is a HUGE different between lifting weights and being a BB....in my mind im creating a vision that i have in my head. Cant do that just slinging weights around. I didnt realize that til i got older of course...lol.
And of course "whatever it takes..."
i have a motto i use also, never go straight for the ass, always work your way round slowly, girls dont like it when you rush straight into it.
good luck.
I once had a friend who thought they were going to quit because their head had it all wrong ;-)
Lol
When I'm lifting its visibly apparent on my face that Im focused/in pain/exhausted/straining to get those last few reps that make or break you. I've trained myself to pull anger from inside while I'm lifting. I have no nice thoughts while lifting. While lifting I am not "nice". I dont pause to text, talk, or lose focus. The reason I rest between sets is because I couldn't finish the last rep on the set just completed. The most important meal for me is after lifting. It is also the biggest. I eat a huge amount of shit I can hardly stomach anymore. I do it knowing I must! There is no exception. That is lifting to me...no fuckin exceptions!
hooya !!!
A-fuggin-men sister!!
rxagentEverything you wrote is pretty much on point. The one thing I disagree with however is the train big to get big. You don't need to go heavy in order to grow. Training smart will get you the same results and longevity with much less risk of injury. You grow on food and drugs so long as you are training.
To me this is bullshit especially for guys just starting out. If they would learn to follow a proper linear progression program and get stronger most wouldn't even turn to aas.
When excess calories are present, gains in strength=gains in muscle. Doggcrapp training proves this to be true even for pros like dave henry.
Absolutely nothing wrong with doing low rep squats heavy if you have proper form and proper depth.
New guys need to learn to lift big and get atronger and understand proper programming, period.
Moderate weights can work so long as you are getting stronger each session. But wnna see somebody look the same year after year, put them on a bro split and tell them strength isn't important. Look glad it works for you but for 90% of new lifters, they need to be pushing their atrength up daily, through either rep records or simply adding weight to the bar. You use aas to grow, most shouldn't until they have built a great base first which ia built by getting stronger and eating eating eating.
Most important thing for a new lifter is understanding the importance of the log book also. Cant know where you are going if you dont know where you have been.
Most new guys have no idea how much food it takes to get big either. Having trouble gaining weight? Try 2xbw in grams of protein every damn day from whole foods if possible.
The steroids my friend are last in the list it's just a tool . Cause if your diet isn't there .. Your training isn't there no amount of AAS will help. By training big it's just a statement . For you lighter weight may work for me I go as heavy as possable , you train big by giving it every once you have Everytime you step in the gym brother leave nothing
rxagentI like moderate weight it seems to work best for me. It just makes me cringe when I see people who do not compete in powerlifting throw on 3-4 plates on the squat rack and hit it for 2-3 reps. The risk factor is just not worth it to me. I think I would just hate to see someone injure themselves by going too heavy because it happens all too often.
I agree if one cant handle the weight properly with good form then its to heavy. but three plates to you might be heavy but to me its a warm up its all in perspective but I get what your saying brother.
rxagentYou are likely THE biggest guy on this site lol you would put me to shame on all lifts
no there are some monsters on here bro im no way the strongest or biggest guy
TronCatalyst is pretty massive to but I think you still have 20 pounds or so on him lol
I'm small in comparison to the big fella. About 276lbs at present.
So 276 is small bro???? NOT
Don't let him bullshit you he is a monster
You both are compared to my little 226 pound ass.
lol
It's all realitive .. I'm
Not ripped cat is .. I carry a little more fat then I normally do it makes it easier to throw the weight around during compitition .. You just need to be the best 226 you can be and if you happy then that's all that matters . I stopped trying to compare myself to other people a long time ago .. I just try to focus on my task at hand and do what I have to do to get there
I agree bro I try to be my best no matter what in life as well husband and as a dad.
Yea you throw around some heavy shit.
Now get busy I hear you having a meet soon lol
I'm shooting for December meet
Good luck bro I'm sure you will do well you always do. This is a national qualifier isn't it?
Yes it is . I've done a local .. Then state .. Then regional .. And this is for a national qualifier .. I know my knee won't be 100 % right now I'm just trying to over compensate upper body to help take stress of my lower half
Cool hope you do well bro. I know you will give it your all.
TronAnd that is scary to think a 275 pounder is "small" in comparison to another...you guys are beasts.
Beasts indeed .... but proportion and uber symmetry are the factors that win the trophys, trust me :/
Omg the queen from overseas is back how have u been
Tis not the Queen bro.... tis me the Natural one, how you doing big fella
My account is fucked so ive just had a look around using this one...... joint seems fkn quiet bro.
Life took over for a while (dont ask its a long story) but all is good with me, im fit and healthy and just pulled a 2nd place spot a few weeks ago so yeah im still in the game, moved house blah blah blah, suzys new gym is up and running, been a busy period, things are just starting to settle down now and a normal existence can resume lmao
GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK BROTHER PLEASE DONT BE A STRANGER. Has been real quiet not a lot of the old guys left around anymore but I think its just that time of year and when it starts to get cold it will pick up in here
At 340lbs you wouldn't want to treat him to lunch would you??????
TronIm a measly 205 bro...he could eat me if he wanted lol.
rxagent341 says otherwise!! Biggest guy I've seen is the drolxxx guy who was a rep for hulk since day 1. Maybe 290s low body fat but 341 is still 341
This has been helping me out lately.
WadeBEEI am having one of those days were I am trying to find every excuse in the book NOT to hit the gym (weird I know) but fortunately, after reading this post, I cant get to the gym fast enough! Thanks for taking the time to write GymJunkie01! Much appreciated
When i see the skinny dudes walking around that dont lift....i am always glad i do...and that motivates me more and more every day...
It only hurts while your conscious =)
Awesome haha!
Lol true
RustyhookerThat over the top level of training is where all gains are made. High five!
Exactly right!
exactly I forget who it was ? remember somebody here had a weekly forum for just newbs it was a question answer type forum its been a while cant remember who it was tho
RustyhookerFitcouple. And yes, he's been gone a while. Good dude too
Yep that dude was straight up. Helped me a lot. Too bad he's not on anymore
Double post and I fat thumbed a +1 on me. Dumbass
It's only pain. As my training partner often says "don't let it beat you".
I learned this way back in the military they proved over and over the body is capable of so much more than you think the mind fails every time unless your train otherwise
A much needed post for psycholoical stability.....
