Advice on high FSH and LH levels

ad

Hello, looking for some input on a recent blood test I had done. Hopefully this is the right place and ill try keep it short. All my results fell within the normal ranges except for 2. IM 30 at 78kgs at around 12%
FSH 37.4 IU/L (2.0 -12.0)
LH 15.2 IU/L (2.0 - 9.0)
Testosterone was 18.3 nmoI/L (8.0 - 29.0)
My doctor sent me to an endo, and he doesnt seem to worried but Im getting a MRI scan of my pituitary and sum jizz to get tested. I havent touched any AAS as of yet but feel this is the best place for sum advices. Note i also had chemo for cancer 17 years ago. My main questions are what can cause this other than a tumor in the pituitary? and how would this affect me if i started using AAS and on PCT?

Ok, just an update for the record, MRI scan came back ok, ultra sound of my balls all ok, but my sperm count came back 0 and fertility doc said im fried from the chemo i had so no kids for me. My endo seems to want to leave me as is too as my testosterone is within the normal range. But i am still unaware of how this will affect me when PCT time comes if i decide to run a cycle of AAS so still wondering? does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Well, I"m no endocrinologist, but a few things occur to me:

The most likely scenario is that your testes are producing testosterone, but they are not as sensitive to the pituitary hormones as they should be. Kind of analogous to type II diabetes where the pancreas makes insulin, but the body's cells are insensitive to it, so it takes more and more insulin to get the same blood sugar equilibrium response. I'm not sure why that would happen, but your history of chemo may be a part of it. It depends on what chemo drugs you were on as to whether it is a possibility.

The next scenario is less likely, because it would take two separate explanations: you have a pituitary lesion that is excreting higher than normal levels of FSH and LH (unusual, but possible) AND your testes don't respond normally to elevated pituitary hormones, so your T is in a normal range.

Lastly, in the least likely scenario I can think of, there are extremely rare tumors that secrete those hormones. Most commonly in men they are testicular tumors. Do a testicular self-exam. (Weird that this is the second time I've made this recommendation on this board today--when it rains, it pours...balls.)

If your sperm count is low, something is clearly off with your gonads. Again, it may be the chemo history. Can't really say though.

Please remember this is just speculation from a well-educated stranger who doesn't know anything more about you than what you posted. So take it for what it is worth and whatever you do, don't be distressed by anything I posted here. Just trying to fill in your understanding a bit before you see your doctor.

And lastly, DEFINITELY DO NOT START AAS or any hormone modulation until you have this worked out. You will hopelessly confuse things for any workup that you have trying to figure this out. And some tumors are hormone-sensitive. Not saying you have one, but you don't want to risk it.

Let us know how this unfolds. I'd like to know you're doing well and we on the board can all learn from it.

Thanks TenaciousD great read I will have a few more questions next time i see the endo after my tests now. I was just after sum input as he didn't seem too worried about things as long as my testosterone was in the normal range. But cheers, ill be updating this when i find out whats going on.

I don't have enough knowledge in endocrinology to comment but I would say its best not to start a cycle until you iron things out. There is no need to complicate things
