My two cents:

1. Hire a designer, to make you a nice ad. It could mean 0.1% vs 1% CTR difference.
2. If you don't do business abroad, don't show your ads there. You'd just be spending money on impressions with no results. If you are not an international business, use GEO Targeting for better results.
3. Mobile traffic on eroids has surpassed desktop devices long time ago! Even though desktop users are more likely to be buyers, always create and order a Mobile version of your desktop ad. Non mobile ads will not run on mobile devices.
